Happy reading!

Home on the Range

First up, the range - where the culinary magic truly happens! Ranges typically consist of a stovetop and an oven and options span from sleek electric models to classic gas ranges and even the high-tech induction cooktops.

Before you select your range, first consider your needs, budget and size of your kitchen. Maybe you’re an amateur home chef who’s looking for a high-end option with tons of features, or maybe you’re a takeout person who will sparlingly cook…and of course, there’s a whole spectrum in between. Whatever the case, you'll want to choose an option that best fits your lifestyle. Your choice will also depend on whether your home is powered by gas or electric!

Here’s a few style options to consider:

  • Slide in range: This style is designed to slide between kitchen cabinets, creating a seamless, built-in look. Typically, controls are on the front of the range so there’s no bulky back guard which can also allow you to showcase more of the backsplash.

  • Free standing range: This more affordable option doesn't require installation within cabinetry or between countertops. Instead, it can be placed anywhere in the kitchen if it has access to the necessary utility connections and ventilation.

  • Sizing: Ranges typically fall between 30”- 48”. However, you can go as small as 24”, think of a studio apartment kitchen, and up to 60”...we’re talking 8 burner ranges with all the bells and whistles.

  • Finishes:

    • Stainless steel finishes are a timeless option that exude a modern and sleek vibe, seamlessly blending into a variety of kitchen designs while offering durability and ease of maintenance.

    • Matte black finishes can introduce a sense of sophistication and boldness, making a striking statement in both traditional and modern settings.

    • Custom colors are a fun way to add an unexpected punch of personality and can add an elevated, high-end feel to your kitchen.

HOODs

Range hoods are essential kitchen appliances designed to remove smoke, steam, grease, and odors generated during cooking. There are several options which are often dictated by the range or cooktop you choose. Typically, the range or stovetop you choose will come with a suggested pairing.

Hood options:

  • Wall-mounted range hoods are a popular choice, installed against the wall above the cooking range or cooktop, providing efficient ventilation while adding a sleek focal point to the kitchen.

  • Island range hoods are suspended from the ceiling above kitchen islands, offering effective ventilation for cooking surfaces without adjacent walls.

  • Under-cabinet range hoods are installed beneath overhead cabinets, maximizing space utilization while efficiently extracting cooking byproducts.

*Designer Tip - If space allows, size up your hood! For example, if you have a standard 30” range, install a 36” hood. This makes it feel more substantial and creates an elevated feel.

too Hot to Handle

While a range includes both an oven and cooktop, you can also purchase and install these two appliances separately. This can provide flexibility in your kitchen design, allowing for more customization to suit your cooking preferences and space constraints. This is also a great option if you want a stacked double oven or a center cooktop on your island!

While the type of cooktop and range depend on your layout and utility hookups, here’s a few options to consider:

  • Gas ovens: Loved for their instant heat control and moist cooking environment, gas ovens are a favorite among many chefs for their reliability and versatility.

  • Electric ovens: Sleek and efficient, electric ovens offer consistent heat distribution, making them ideal for baking delicate pastries and desserts with precision.

  • Convection ovens: These gems use fans to circulate hot air, cooking food faster and more evenly. Say goodbye to unevenly cooked dishes – convection ovens ensure every bite is perfection.

  • Combination ovens: For the ultimate cooking flexibility, combination ovens offer both convection and microwave capabilities, allowing you to whip up gourmet meals in record time.

  • Gas stovetops: This offers instant heat control, making them a favorite among many chefs for their precision. Plus, who doesn't love the satisfying click of the igniter and the comforting hiss of the flame?

  • Induction stovetops: These have come a long way in recent years. With smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces and precise temperature control, they're perfect for the neat freaks among us (you know who you are!). They're also super-efficient and ridiculously fast – perfect for those hectic weeknight dinners when every second counts.

WARM IT UP

Let's now take a moment to appreciate a humble yet essential element of modern cooking…the microwave! While maybe not the sexiest of appliances, they’re necessary for whipping up quick meals, reheating leftovers, and saving the day when hunger strikes!

While wall mounted microwaves, especially centered over the range, were standard for years, built-in models and microwave drawers are becoming increasingly popular. Now, you can integrate your microwave into your lower cabinetry for a seamless, cohesive design.

Keeping it Cool

Choosing the right refrigerator for your kitchen remodel is no small task. With so many designs, features, and finishes, it can feel like navigating a maze of choices. Before you dive in, consider your kitchen layout, lifestyle, and storage needs. Also consider the features that matter most to you. Do you want a built-in water and ice dispenser? How about adjustable shelving to accommodate tall bottles and bulky items? Are you a fan of smart technology, like Wi-Fi connectivity and touchscreen controls? Make a list of your must-have features and prioritize them accordingly!

Style:

  • French door refrigerator: If you're looking to add a touch of luxury, this design with its double doors and bottom freezer drawer, is a great choice. They offer easy access to both fresh and frozen foods, along with plenty of storage space for larger items like party platters and pizza boxes.

  • Side-by-side refrigerator: For those who crave organization and convenience, this might be the way to go. With its vertical split between the fridge and freezer compartments, this design makes it easy to see and access all your groceries at a glance.

  • Top-freezer refrigerators: These are a more affordable option making them a popular choice for budget-conscious shoppers and smaller kitchens.

Finish:

  • Stainless steel: A classic choice that can add a sleek modern or industrial feel to your space.

  • Painted: Great for infusing personality into your design. Think about a creamy white or blue for a groovy, mid-century modern feel.

  • Cabinet panel: - These create an elevated, luxe feel and make your refrigerator seamlessly blend into the rest of your cabinetry.

Size matters too! Before purchasing a refrigerator, be sure to measure the space where it will be installed to ensure a proper fit. Consider factors like door swing clearance, ventilation requirements, and accessibility to other kitchen appliances and cabinets.
