We’ve had the pleasure of transforming countless kitchens into functional and stunning spaces and one of our favorite elements of a kitchen also happens to be the topic of this blog…the backsplash! Among the various elements that contribute to a kitchen's aesthetics and functionality, the backsplash selection is a favorite because well, it’s pretty! Your backsplash is a canvas for creativity and expression and allows you to infuse your space with your own unique, personal style. From classic subway tiles to artisan mosaics, there's literally thousands of materials & styles to choose from and each one brings its own distinct look and feel. However, your backsplash is not just about looks; it's also about protecting your kitchen's walls from splatters and spills so the materials you choose should not only match your desired design aesthetic, but also your lifestyle.

From creating culinary magic to socializing and entertaining with family and friends, your kitchen is a place where memories are made, so it’s important that you love your finished space! In this blog we’ll guide you through the backsplash selection process by sharing details on materials & style, tricks of the trade, our designer-approved tile selections, plus lots of design inspiration & more!

MATERIAl, shape & style

Neutral subway tile effortlessly blends into this light and airy kitchen acting as a supporting role in the design

Before we dive in, it’s important to address that the backsplash is just one element in your kitchen and it should harmonize with the other elements in the space, such as the countertops, cabinets, and flooring. When we say harmonize, we mean that it should complement the entire look and feel of the space…which is why having a plan and concept when starting is key. When clients hire us, we always start by looking at design concepts, inspiration photos and sometimes create multiple mood boards to hone in on the desired aesthetic. So, head to Pinterest and pin away!

By considering your kitchen's overall design, color palette, and your personal style, it will help you choose the perfect backsplash. For example, in the photo above, our clients wanted a neutral, modern kitchen that felt calm and peaceful which is why you see a neutral, classic subway tile instead of something bold and printed. Now, would something bold and printed have looked good? Totally! It’s just a different look, which is why understanding whether you want your backsplash to be the star of the show or play more of a supporting role is so important.

With that being said, the selection of material & style is crucial in setting the tone for your kitchen, so you’ll want to understand all the options you have before making your selection.

MATERIAL OPTIONS:

  • Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles: These are timeless and offer an endless variety of colors, sizes, and patterns. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are not only durable but also easy to clean.

  • Natural Stone: Materials like marble, granite, or travertine offer a luxurious, organic look. Keep in mind that natural stones require more maintenance.

  • Glass Tiles: Perfect for a modern or contemporary kitchen, glass tiles can add a touch of elegance and a pop of color. They are also incredibly easy to clean.

  • Mosaic Tiles: Mosaic tiles are small, preset tiles mounted on a mesh backing. They are an artistic choice and are typically an affordable option.

  • Concrete Backsplash: While typical gray concrete lends itself to more modern & industrial kitchens, there are some incredible new companies like Popham Designs that are reinventing how we think of concrete tile and whose designs compliment an array of styles & preferences.

  • Patterned Tiles: Whether it's intricate Mediterranean patterns or Moroccan-inspired designs, patterned tiles can infuse character and charm into your kitchen.

  • Slab: This look has been trending in recent years and is when you continue your countertop up your backsplash or simply use one piece of stone slab instead of tile as your backsplash.

SHAPE & STYLE OPTIONS:

Hex, square, and picket oh my! There are dozens of tile shapes, and we obviously can’t name them all but you can check out the most popular ones below and click to see more from our favorite tile vendors. Keep in mind that there is no “right” tile style. It’s more important to choose a shape and size you love! If you like funky colors & fun patterns, go for it! If you’re looking for something classic and timeless, a 3” x 6” subway tile or a 4” x 4” square tile are always great options.

INSTALLATION

Playful turquoise backsplash brought a vibrant burst of color and personality to this white, shaker kitchen.

Once you've chosen your materials, colors, and patterns, it's essential to consider the layout and installation. Our #1 tip is to make sure to work with an experienced installer who can bring your vision to life! Working with a designer will also ensure that your space turns out exactly how you imagined and a designer can also provide vetted referrals for quality tile installers.

One element that can be easy to overlook is grout. Just like tile, there are a lot of options so take time to select your grout color as it will greatly affect the look of your tile.

GROUT TIPS:

  • The shade you choose depends on what you are trying to accomplish in your design. If you want to showcase the pattern your tile creates, a contrasting color is best

  • For high traffic areas, you might consider choose a darker color grout.

  • Always refer to product specs before choosing your grout size to make sure your complaint with the tile requirements because certain tiles require specific grout widths

  • For a modern look, consider using a 1/16" grout size with a grout that matches your tile

  • Make sure to use an epoxy based grout so that there's no need for sealing

  • Our favorite grout brands are Custom & Kiesel

  • Keep in mind, the smaller the tile, the more grout lines to clean

design ideas

A slab backsplash featuring the same marble as the counters gives this ktichen a sleek, high-end look.

The bottom line is that if you’re planning on being in your home for at least the next 5 years, then go all in with your design choices. It’s important for you to love your space and enjoy it while you’re there. Choosing the right color and texture for your backsplash will significantly impact your overall kitchen design so, as we mentioned before, compiling an inspiration board is a great first step in narrowing down your design direction. For example, lighter colors can make your kitchen feel more spacious and open, while darker colors create a cozy and intimate atmosphere while textured tiles can add depth and interest to your backsplash, creating a unique focal point.

DESIGN IDEAS TO TRY:

  • If your kitchen is small, you might be tempted to choose small tile, but by choosing larger scale tile, you’ll actually create the illusion of a larger space

  • For a high-end look, bring your backsplash tile all the way to the ceiling

  • Use two backsplash tiles in same area. For example, try a different yet complementing tile in your coffee bar!

  • Try an accent tile behind the range

  • Run your countertops up the backsplash

There are so many fun ideas to try! For additional inspiration, head to our portfolio. We hope you feel excited and empowered to step into the world of tile and select the perfect backsplash for your kitchen.
