First and foremost, mid-century modern style should incorporate striking colors. Not necessarily all over (however go for it if that’s your vibe) but certainly a few splashes will help you nail the look. Aqua, orange, lime green and shades of pink are all common colors but there’s a wide range of hues that can channel this look, so have fun exploring your options! In this bathroom, we chose a statement hex floor that packs a real wow factor. Paired with other mid-century design elements (like sleek flat panel wood walnut cabinetry, wallpaper and fun accessories) we created a visually exciting space that feels funky, yet refined.

Consider using earthy tones to evoke a sense of nature and complement the mid-century emphasis on organic shapes and materials
Soft pastel colors can add a touch of retro charm while maintaining a light and airy feel
Colors like white, beige, or light gray provide a clean and timeless backdrop that allows the iconic mid-century furniture and accents to stand out

Geometric shapes
Geometric shapes are the life of the design party when it comes to mid-century modern design! Clean lines, groovy forms, and a commitment to functionality were the big elements of this time. Rectangles, circles, and triangles got their moment in the spotlight, popping up in everything from backsplash, to lighting, to furniture and decor. Geometric shapes reflect a minimalist vibe and the more the merrier!
Design tips:
Try layering geometric textiles. Graphic area rugs, throw pillows, and even upholstered accent chairs can introduce pattern in a lower-commitment way.
Incorporate pattern through millwork. Slatted wood paneling, reeded cabinetry, or geometric cabinet fronts subtly nod to the era while keeping things elevated.
In a kitchen, try an angular backsplash paired with iconic sputnik lighting to create a fun and playful juxtaposition in your space

Wallpaper
Mid-century modern design took the notion of wall coverings to a whole new level and wallpaper become a key player in the interiors of this era. Mid-century modern wallpaper was all about playful bold patterns and daring designs. Often, colors like mustard yellow and avocado green were used, but for a toned-town approach, consider a more neutral option and instead feature bold colors through your decor and accessories.
Design Tips:
Palm leaves, geometrics and orbital patterns are all great options for a mid-century home.
Pair with clean-lined furniture: If your wallpaper is bold, keep surrounding furniture simple and low-profile. Sleek silhouettes balance graphic walls beautifully.
To incorporate wallpaper on a smaller scale, consider wallpapering behind a bookshelf for a subtle surprise

Wood PAIRED WITH TERRAZZO
During the mid-20th century there was a rise in the use of new materials such as plexiglass and laminate. However, one of the materials that is most synonymous with mid-century design has been around for thousands of years, and that material is terrazzo! Terrazzo is a composite material that is made by pouring a solid layer of concrete then embedding small pieces of marble, stone, glass or other materials into the surface. Afterwards, the surface is set, dried, ground, polished and sealed which results in a beautifully detailed and colored surface that can be used on floors, walls or countertops.
Another popular mid-century element is the use of mid-range wood tones, like walnut and teak. When you pair these two elements together, you’ll create an iconic mid-century flair!

In a kitchen, try pairing natural wood cabinets with terrazzo floors
Terrazzo isn’t just for kitchens and bathrooms, in project ‘Surf’s Up’ (seen above) we chose terrazzo for the fireplace surround
Consider using terrazzo-look porcelain for a budget friendly approach
You don’t have to go big. Small pieces like a terrazzo vase or coasters can add a fun pop
