The Vanity Lighting Rules Everyone Gets Wrong

So here’s the thing about lighting…the nuance of how the scale, form, and actual function of a light all work together in a space can be complicated and a bit overwhelming for a lot of people. Because sure, finding a beautiful fixture is important, but it's rarely the reason a bathroom feels elevated. More often, it's how that fixture works with everything around it that makes the space feel polished, balanced, and undeniably custom.
So, we’re pulling back the curtain…Consider this a behind-the-scenes look at how we think about vanity lighting and the design "rules" we break (and the ones we never do) to create bathrooms that feel timeless, intentional, and beautifully layered.
It's Never Just About the Fixture

We don't treat vanity lighting like the final accessory (this is a big mistake we see)… it's part of the design conversation from the very beginning.
In fact, sometimes a design starts with an unforgettable peice that immediately sets the direction for a space, like a sculptural vanity light fixture that becomes the jumping-off point for the bathroom’s materials, finishes, and overall mood.
More often though, the design process is a little more organic. We may begin with a feeling, a color palette, or a broader vision, and allow the materials, lighting, fixtures, and finishes to come together as the story unfolds. Regardless of where the inspiration begins, lighting is never an afterthought. It’s an integral part of how we design a home and has a tremendous impact on how a space feels, functions, and comes to life.
Regarless of how the design starts, the process is the same. Detailed design boards and realistic renderings, bring all of these elements together visually, giving our clients the clarity and confidence to see how every piece works within the larger design before moving forward with selections.
What our Designers See:
The need for texture & warmth
Something to compliment the roundness of the mirror and sink
An organic material to channel the spa-like feel
A “Rule” We Broke:
The vanity sconces aren’t centered to the middle of the mirror, they’re slightly higher than the exact center height
Why:
It creates a more elevated look: In high-end design, we often avoid making every element mathematically centered. Slightly shifting lighting upward can create a more architectural, custom feel—especially with tall mirrors, decorative sconces, or wall-mounted fixtures.
Better facial lighting: The ideal vanity lighting is generally at eye level or slightly above eye level so the light falls across the face more evenly. If sconces are too low, they can cast upward shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin…scary!
These are the kinds of thing we think about that shape our decisions long before a fixture is ever installed.

Over-the-Mirror Lighting isnt the Only Option

When most people picture bathroom vanity lighting, they think of a single fixture mounted above the mirror. It's a classic for a reason. The right fixture, thoughtfully sized and beautifully detailed, can feel timeless, architectural, and incredibly custom.
But it's far from your only option.
Some of our favorite bathrooms break away from the expected. Depending on the architecture of the room, the scale of the vanity, and the overall design direction, lighting can become one of the most distinctive features in the space.
The best choice isn't about following a rule, it's about creating balance.

Other options we might consider:
Suspend pendants instead of mounting sconces. A beautiful way to add height, softness, and a custom feel.
Place one statement fixture between two mirrors. Especially striking over a double vanity where symmetry matters more than matching each sink.
Use three fixtures across a long vanity. A central fixture with one on each end can create beautiful rhythm and provide even illumination.
Skip matching altogether. Pair sculptural sconces with an understated decorative ceiling fixture for a more layered, collected look.
Let the lighting become the focal point. Oversized or artistic fixtures can act like jewelry for the room.
Highlight architectural details. Wall-mounted fixtures can emphasize millwork, stone, or custom mirrors instead of competing with them.
Mix decorative and task lighting. Concealed lighting, recessed fixtures, or toe-kick lighting can handle function while decorative fixtures create the mood.
Think beyond the vanity. A chandelier, flush mount, or pendant elsewhere in the bathroom helps create depth and makes the space feel intentionally designed rather than simply well-lit.
Rather than following a formula, we're always asking what the space is asking for.

Sometimes the Most Elevated Choice is the Unexpected One

Now, choosing the type of fixture you want (pendant, sconce, over-head) is one thing, but then comes the actual selection. For us, some of our favorite bathrooms are the ones where the style of the fixture is a little surprising.
The kind of choices that catch your eye and make a space feel elevated and uniquely personal…things like:
Modern lighting with traditional architecture.
A classic bathroom with marble, millwork, or vintage-inspired details doesn’t always need a traditional fixture. A sleek, sculptural sconce or minimalist pendant can create a beautiful contrast, making the space feel collected rather than like a recreation of a specific era.Softness to modern spaces with organic fixtures.
Clean lines and contemporary materials can sometimes benefit from a touch of warmth. A fixture with natural materials, curved silhouettes, or handcrafted details can soften a modern bathroom and make it feel more inviting.
These decisions aren’t made simply to be different. They’re intentional responses to the architecture, the proportions of the space, and the feeling we want the room to evoke.
