How to Create The Ultimate Fall Tablescape

Fall is a favorite season for many because well, why wouldn’t it be? Sweater weather, beautiful changing leaves, parties, family time, an over abundance of sweet, baked goods…need we say more? Whether it's a Halloween gathering, a Thanksgiving feast, or simply a cozy get-together, the fall season is a special time to create cherished memories. While welcoming friends and family into your home captures the essence of the season, the idea of hosting and decorating is understandbly a little daunting, which is why we created this blog! We’ve done the hard work for you and are sharing everything you need to effortlessly create a stylish, stunning tablescape that is seasonally appropriate & timeless meaning, you can use it for years to come!

1. keep it organic

A neutral palette is both modern and elegant, making it ideal for just about any style or space. Over the past few years, people have been ditching the traditional bright oranges & reds that we usually think of for fall and are instead embracing a tone-on-tone look that is more neutral, natural and subdued.

Now, this doesn’t mean not to use any color…but for a chic take, consider using small, micro-accents of color instead of bold statement pieces. By using selective pops of color, your fall decor will easily blend in with your existing pieces, making your space feel more cohesive and thoughtfully curated.

Use this color palette for inspiration while shopping.

Color is important, but so is texture! Items made of natural materials feature beautiful textures which create a multi-dimensional and visually stunning display. Texture also creates the illusion of warmth which is perfect to set the autumn mood…and since this season is historically very much tied to nature and the abundance it provides, earthy accessories are the perfect way to embody the meaning of fall.

For an elegant, organic look, opt for items that are made of or inspired by nature. Try items like:

  • Linen or cotton: We love a stonewashed linen

  • Wood: Try layering in an array of natural wood tones

  • Ceramic or stoneware: Glazed or speckled options will add an artisan feel

  • Rattan or straw: Perfect for adding in earthy textures

  • Greenery or dried florals: Eucalyptus, rosemary & wax flower add a fresh pop of green while we love pampass grass and palm spears for dried options

  • Warm scented candles: Scents like rhubarb, vanilla, honey & tobacco add a rich & welcoming feel to your space and help play up the fall mood

2. embrace the imperfect & layer, layer, layer!

Creating an organic look isn’t just about choosing organic materials, it’s also in the art of how you place and style them. To acheive an effortless tablescape vibe, you’ll need to embracing the imperfections of nature. While traditional styles may feature a streamlined, uniform look, an organic tablescape offers a little more creative freedom. It's about placing items in an effortless, uncontrived way - things don’t need to be perfectly lined up. In fact, a little movement is exactly what you’re going for. The table should feel abundant so… layer, layer, layer! Certainly be thoughtful in your placement (we’re not talking about just tossing items anywhere) but by embracing a whimsical approach you’ll create an inviting setting that exudes a genuine warmth that your guests will love!

STYLING TIPS:

  • To break up the warm, autumn tones, use a pop of green! Try artfully placing eucalyptus down the center of the table

  • You can also tuck a sprig of greenery in your napkin rings. Rosemary or waxflower are perfect!

  • Place candles or other decorative items in the eucalyptus to create a layered look

  • Nest your plates!

  • Gold flatware gives an unexpected yet festive pop of sparkle

  • Multi-colored glasses give a bit of vintage charm, as does mixing different candle styles

3. select Timeless Decor

Switching up your home decor to reflect the changing seasons makes things feel fresh & exciting, however there are a few tricks to keeping the process sustainable and affordable.

By keeping your fall tablescape decor neutral & organic you can easily transition those same items into winter, saving you energy down the line. By investing in decor that isn't just for a specific holiday, it can last you from fall through winter and even into the new year! For example, ditch that bright orange vase for a simple ceramic or gold one instead. Something neutral yet festive, can easily be updated to reflect a specific season or mood. For fall, we’ve thrown in some gorgeous, dried florals and then, we can easily swap them out for something more wintery like holly leaves when the time arrives!
